‘1931 Café’ Pop-Up Lands in Shanghai

Located at K11 in Shanghai, the new café evokes the elegant exterior of an ocean liner from the 1930’s and all the glamour of a modern-day film set.

The colour palette of the store is a contrast, with the black-and-white married well with warm and complementary light, making the place feel like it belongs to another era entirely. The signature Art Deco feature, which is that of a marble floor with an inlaid geometric pattern, simply adds to the overall charisma of the café.

French Pastry Chef Nina Métayer has created a special collection of cakes and pastries using flavours of the valley. Just some of the specific creations for this pop-up include a piece that reminds guests of the snowy landscape of the Jura in winter while covering a bust of summer fruit in its centre. Paying tribute to Art Deco style is an artistic, rectangular confection of hazelnuts and chocolate.

Nina Métayer says: “What appealed to me greatly about this collaboration with Jaeger-LeCoultre was the idea of bringing together two very different expressions of craftsmanship in one project. The pastry chef and the watchmaker share the same deep values, and our gestures are driven by the same desire: not to create for ourselves but to excel for the pleasure of the recipient.”

Launched yesterday, the pop-up in Shanghai runs until 15 August before moving onto a new location in the heart of Paris.
